American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is taking its best shot against cancer – why don’t you?  Play in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life on the Fairway starting at 1:00 pm on Thursday, August 5th at Asheville Municipal Golf Course.   Open to Men, Women and Couples Teams. Weaverville Firefighters Association

The Weaverville Professional Firefighters Association will be holding a celebrity golf tournament on Monday July 26th at Reems Creek Golf Club.  The event will be preceeded by a meet and greet reception on July 25th at the Fireplace Restaurant.  Each team that enters will be paired with a current or former professional athlete for their round of golf.  All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Mountain Area Red Cross and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  Golfers interested in playing or businesses interested in sponsorship opportunities should contact Karan Young with Venture Sports Shows at 828.776.3402.  Come enjoy a great day of food, golf, and fellowship, all to benefit a great cause.

 

Ty Blanton Foundation

The North Carolina Justice Academy will present a seminar July 16^th and 17^th to train law enforcement personnel on the importance of maintaining a survival mind-set both on and off-duty.  The seminar is coinciding with the recent two-year anniversary of the slaying of state trooper Shawn Blanton.  The seminar, open to law enforcement officers only, has just 100 slots available.  Fee is 65 dollars and registration runs through July 1^st.  Proceeds will benefit the Tye Blanton Foundation, named for Shawn’s infant son, who died after being born prematurely.  For more information, go to www.TyeBlanton.com or call the foundation at 828-215-7272.

 

 

Chain-Free Asheville

The City of Asheville has adopted a law making it illegal to have dogs chained or tethered.  Chain Free Asheville is a local non-profit organization which builds fences for dogs if owners aren’t able to afford to pay for a fence themselves.  Donations and volunteers are still urgently needed.   For more information contact www.chainfreeAsheville.org or email peggyfordogs@aol.com

 

Full Moon Wolfdog Rescue

John Lackey Jr. Memorial

Members of the community are invited to come celebrate the life of John R. Lackey, Jr. with his family and former band students. Mr. Lackey, a well-respected and much loved band director at Enka High School and Middle School from 1967 to 1995, passed away on January 24, 2010. A memorial celebration will be held in his honor on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Enka Middle School stadium. A drop-in reunion will be held from 1:00-3:00 pm for people to reconnect and share their memories of Mr. Lackey. Roan Mountain Citizens Club

The Roan Mountain Citizens Club is holding its 64^th annual Rhodendron Festival at Roan Mountain State park in Roan Mountain, Tennessee on Saturday and Sunday, June 19^th and 20^th.   Admission is free.  Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.  More than 90 vendors will be selling a variety of handcrafted items.  There will also be food for sale and entertainment.  For more information contact Nita Fleming at 423-772-0212.

 

Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center

The annual Community Independence Day Celebration at Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center will take place Thursday, July 1^st beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Festivities will include carnival games, prizes for children, snack sales, tram rides and a 50/50 raffle.  Master of Ceremonies will be Susan Mundy.  The evening will include fireworks at dusk.  Parking is available on campus until 8:30, roads will be blocked at that time.  Please leave your pets at home.  For more information, call 259-6700.
